One year ago, Bailiffgate Hotel welcomed its first guests and began a new chapter in the history of one of Alnwick’s most distinctive buildings. After years of careful restoration and planning, the doors officially opened on 28th May 2025, bringing together heritage, hospitality and contemporary luxury in the heart of Northumberland.

Twelve months later, we are proud to celebrate our first birthday.

From the moment we opened, our vision was simple: to create a hotel that honours the rich history of Bailiffgate while offering a warm and memorable experience for every guest. Over the past year, we have welcomed visitors from across the UK and beyond, hosted special occasions, introduced guests to the very best of Northumberland, and become part of countless memorable stays.

Located just moments from the iconic Alnwick Castle, Bailiffgate Hotel has quickly established itself as a destination for those seeking a blend of history, comfort and exceptional hospitality. With 48 individually designed bedrooms, a restaurant celebrating local produce, and a location at the heart of one of England’s most historic market towns, the hotel offers a unique base from which to explore the region.

A Building With A Story To Tell

The history of Bailiffgate stretches back centuries. Once the Duke of Northumberland’s Commissioner’s House, the building later became a school before being transformed into the luxury hotel guests enjoy today. The restoration carefully preserved the character and heritage of the property while creating a modern retreat designed for contemporary travellers.

As we celebrate our first year, we’re grateful to everyone who has played a part in this journey, from the teams who brought the project to life, to the local businesses, suppliers and guests who have supported us since opening day.
